Pride Turned Back Toward Protest on Broadway

Mora · 2026-06-30 · Broadway and Halsted

The 55th Chicago Pride Parade stepped off at 11am on June 28, two miles from Sheridan and Broadway down through Halsted and Belmont and east to Cannon Drive. It typically draws around a million spectators and more than 15,000 participants. The official theme was Free to Be Proud, framed by organisers as honouring the trailblazers who made it possible to live openly and with dignity.

The parade that actually rolled was read differently by the people in it. The framing on the route was that the turned back toward protest. The mood on the route was a community celebrating unity despite attacks, summed up by a line somebody in the crowd was carrying: they refused to surrender the celebration.

Those two headlines are the whole tension. An official theme in the register of civic commemoration, and a route full of people who had not come to commemorate anything.

Two Movements Marching Together

The most consequential thing in the parade was a coalition. The Gay Liberation Network and Organized Communities Against Deportations marched together, explicitly linking LGBTQ+ organising to immigrant defence.

In a different year that would read as solidarity in the abstract. In the summer of 2026 it is a specific alliance about a specific thing, formed in the same months that Little Village cancelled its Cinco de Mayo parade for a second year, that Fiesta del Sol ran with trained response teams, and that El Grito livestreamed its civic ceremony for people afraid to attend in person. Two communities that are policed differently decided to walk the same two miles.

Security around the route was heightened, with barriers installed and CPD officers working days off. A parade that needs that apparatus to proceed is already making the protest argument on its own, whatever the banner over it says.

Fifty-Five Years, and the Step-Off Time

The smaller change was the clock. The 2026 step-off moved to 11am, earlier than historical practice, and that adjustment was itself news — the latest round in a long negotiation between the parade, the neighborhood it runs through, and the police who manage it. Northalsted absorbs a million people in a day and then goes back to being a residential commercial strip on Monday, and the terms of that arrangement get renegotiated in small increments like an hour on a clock.

@diagogiron

Fifty-five years is the distance from a Stonewall-era march to a civic mega-event with a theme, a sponsor structure and a street-closure plan. The usual way to tell that story is as progress, and it mostly is. The thing worth noticing about 2026 is that the direction of travel reversed slightly. A parade that had spent decades becoming a celebration spent this June remembering it started as a demonstration.

Broadway reopened that evening. What the coalition that formed on it does next is the part with a future.
