4th on 53rd Did the Fourth of July With a Marching Band

Mora · 2026-07-06 · 1525 E. 53rd St

The 4th on 53rd parade stepped off from 1525 East 53rd Street on Saturday July 4, followed by a free festival with activities and marching bands. It is a neighbourhood Fourth of July in a city that largely hands the holiday over to a fireworks display for tourists.

The Anti-Spectacle Case

Chicago’s default Fourth is Navy Pier — fireworks over the lake, an enormous crowd, and an experience in which nobody participates in anything. You watch, you leave, you spend two hours getting home. It is a fine evening and it is entirely passive.

A neighbourhood parade is the opposite proposition. Children ride bicycles with streamers in the spokes. A school marching band plays slightly out of tune. Somebody’s uncle drives a convertible. The audience is the same people as the participants, and the whole thing takes ninety minutes and ends in a park.

That format is almost extinct in large American cities and it survives in Hyde Park partly because of what Hyde Park is: a neighbourhood with an unusually strong civic self-image, a university at its centre, and a long habit of organising its own institutions rather than waiting for the city.

Two Kinds of Patriotism in One Summer

The comparison worth drawing is with the summer’s other patriotic programming, because 2026 put three very different versions of it on the calendar.

The Grant Park Music Festival programmed its season around America 250 and ran its annual Independence Day Salute with a professional orchestra in a Gehry bandshell — patriotism as concert repertoire. Hyde Park did it with a drill team and a bike parade. And in September, El Grito livestreamed its civic ceremony honouring Mexican Independence so that people too frightened of immigration enforcement to stand in a downtown park could still take part.

Those three events describe the range of what a national celebration meant in this city this year, and the distance between the third and the first two is the thing to sit with.

Hyde Park’s Particular Self-Regard

It should be said that Hyde Park’s civic confidence is occasionally insufferable and mostly earned. The neighbourhood runs the oldest juried art fair in the city on 57th Street, a free jazz festival that hit its twentieth year in September, and a Fourth of July parade, all substantially volunteer-run.

That is three durable free institutions in one neighbourhood, and the jazz festival alone is more musically serious than most ticketed events in this package.

Kids on bikes, a band, and a park on 53rd Street. No fireworks, no crowd control, nobody stuck on Lake Shore Drive at eleven at night.
